When a well is drilled and deemed to be non-commercial, or when a producing well is no longer commercial, it is plugged and abandoned. A workover rig is brought on location. First the wellhead is removed. Then the rig pulls the production tubing and cuts and pulls as much of the casing as possible. This casing and all other equipment is removed and salvaged. The rig then sets cement plugs in the borehole to prevent migration of fluid between different formations. The casing is cut below the ground surface and a cement plug is set near the surface and the well is capped. Then the surface is reclaimed and returned as close as possible to its original condition.
